Where It Happens
The World
In the year the Iron Lung broke, the Drift was already wearing its second skin. Across a string of dying mining worlds, a vanished people called the Vaelori had buried something on purpose — and built relics to hold it down. Drift Corporation has spent centuries quietly rupturing those relics, releasing what they were made to keep.
What is waking underneath is not an enemy. It is a question, wrongly answered a long time ago, waiting to be answered again. This is the grammar of that world — and the worlds a small crew crossed to reach it.
The Lexicon
The Vaelori root for the function the whole universe turns on — a thing held in place. The relics are not treasures; they are locks. The seven sites are the seven sethaal-ku, the holding-places.
When a keeping fails and what it held begins to wake. The catastrophe the book is named for.
Self-knowing residency — a built thing aware of its own function. The deepest idea in the book; what a person becomes when they stop being something done to them.
Not a monster to be destroyed. A question that was answered wrong a very long time ago, waiting with terrible patience to be answered again.
The vanished people who made the locks — and who built the seven not as monuments to the architecture, but as the architecture itself.
The Crossing
Seven worlds, from a mine to the question at the bottom of everything.

Korr Vanta
A dying mining colony. Where a routine fault became the investigation of a very old thing — what the ground had been holding, and at what price.

Orias Blue
A storm-harbor of kelp and iron. Where the keeping-word first entered the record, in an underwater chamber no one was meant to read.

The Drowned Crown
One of the seven holding-places, deep beneath the water — and the thing the deep water held.

Helion
A twin-sun temple, where the confrontation was framed as a trial, not a battle: not who is strongest, but who is willing to be held.

Bastion-9
The company's Executive Continuity Tower — where the face behind two hundred and forty years of careful patience was finally seen.

The Vaelori Gate
The threshold between dimensions, and the dead worlds beyond it. A door that knows it is a door.

The Sovereign Below
The question at the bottom of everything. The crew had to decide whether to seal it, bind it forever, or answer it — and let the answer change the room.
